Pecussionist Looking for Work
South Carolina native, Roger Elhodge Mays has always felt the music in his soul. As a very young child he was inspired by many of the legendary gospel groups such as “The Mighty Clouds of Joy,” “The Five Blind Boys” and the “Soul Stirrers” which performed at Clarke Baptist Church and Saint Paul Baptist Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
In 1962 Roger moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was educated in the Philadelphia school system, later earning his Associate Degree in Business Management and Paralegal Studies, majoring in Corporate Law. In 1969 he moved to West Philadelphia where he became interested in African drum rhythms taking lessons from Kirk Keys, Dave Bivens, Bobby “BaBa” Crowder and Richard “Mutt” Barber at the Lee Culture Center. Roger had learned the rudiments of drum rhythms while in high school in South Carolina and continued that education when he moved North. On weekends he and fellow percussionists would meet at The Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park to play their percussion instruments sharing techniques and rhythms with one another. The air would be filled with the sound of drums creating a tapestry of rhythm. It was a time of celebration for the hundreds of people who would come to the park.
From 1972 to 1980 Roger met the “Honey And The Bees” (who in part later became “The Richie Family”) and became their driver and assistant working closely with Jimmy Bishop Sr. It was during their engagements at the Uptown Theater that Roger had the privilege to study the business of music and stage production by watching two of the greats, Leon Mitchell and Walt Reed of Philadelphia. While touring with “The Bees” he had the opportunity to associate with some of the greatest artists who have ever lived and made the music what it is today.
During the 1980’s Kenny Gamble started the International Black Music Association as a means to educate aspiring artists worldwide about the music industry. As a result, different
Chapters were formed across the country. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter was formedand founded by Marty Coverdale and Jowharah Shabazz also known as Dr. Jacqueline Swift. As one of the grass roots founders of the Philadelphia Chapter of the BMA, Roger participated in the production of the James Brown, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Linda Creed, Norman Harris and Jack the Rapper Tributes held in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, DC. under the supervision of Chapter heads, Jonathan Black, Al Richardson and Warren Hamilton. It was through this participation that Roger gained his expertise of the business of music.
Over the years, Roger has had both the opportunity to perform at various locations throughout the country; including the Monterey Blues Festival, (California), The Academy of Music, The Robin Hood Dell East, (Philadelphia), The Cotton Club (New York City) and numerous engagements nationwide. On June 22, 2007, he was privileged to be a part of the of the live musical production "The Soul Sounds Of Philadelphia," "The Story Of The Music That Made America Famous" with headliners such as The Delfonics, Billy Paul, Major Harris, The Original Orlons, and The Blue Notes. Some of the proceeds from this event were to benefit Project K.I.D.S. (Knowledge and Information Disseminated Strategically), a non profit organization headed by Dr. Jacqueline Swift, which is dedicated to educating youth and their families about the juvenile justice system and encouraging minority youngsters to avoid the kind of behavior that leads them to a life of crime. Gamble and Huff gave Dr. Swift the rights to produce this production as "The Sounds of Philadelphia" (TSOP) and Roger was one of the musicians of "The All Star Band." A DVD was recorded the night of the event at the Broadway Theater in Pitman, New Jersey, and is being made available to agencies across the globe.
For Roger, it has been, and continues to be an honor and pleasure to be personally or professionally associated with such notables as James Cleveland, Solomon Burke, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Lee Hooker, Fred Wesley, Norman Harris, George Clinton, Donald Byrd, The Delfonics, The Intruders, The Vibrations, Bootsie Collins, Clarence Clemons, Henry “Lightnin” Neal, Buddy Dee, Bluesman Willie Phillips, T Conway and the Revelations, Larry Richardson and Warren Haskins as well as Victory Call Ensemble and the Philadelphia Mass Choir.
Currently, as one of the Black Music Ambassadors to the “Sounds of Philadelphia,” Roger is working closely with Alfie Pollitt and “The Philly All Star Band” and is one of the co-founders of the “Black Entertainment Music Association.” He attends Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwold, New Jersey under the shepherding of Bishop David G. Evans. As an active member of the “Voices of Praise” choir, Roger continues to study various voice and breathing techniques under the direction of Pastor Lonnie V. Hunter III, Worship Pastor, who for 23 years has been the Minister of Music for St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church located in Chicago, Illinois.

performances, and untiring efforts to bring the gift of music to an ever-widening and enormously receptive audience. Regardless of the music genre, Roger is equally at home. This gifted artist is one of a rare breed of percussionists, balancing sensitivity and control with creativity and raw energy.

LOOKING FOR BACK-UP SINGER W/ STRONG VOCALS AND KEYBOARDS
We would not call it Top 40...more a Dance Band. Band has been together 6 mos. # nights a week regular rehearsals in our private studio. Four members. Solid/very tight sound. 20 year+ experience for each of 4 members. Drums, Bass, Hot lead/Rhythm quitar, Strong Lead Female Vocalist. Will first work local clubs for agents and club owners to see us, build a following. Eventually looking towards AC Casinos, full work schedule, making some money. Rock Drummer Wanted
Rock band looking for drummer. Beatles, Who, Strokes, Motorhead, Iggy Pop, Pixies...Music w/ melody. We are 99% original w/ strong writing partnership.
